The Minister of Energy announced the launch of one of the most key projects for the energy system – the Yadenitsa dam. The dam will allow pump-storage Chaira to operate at full capacity for 20 hours. So the total operational capacity will increase 2 times. PS “Chaira” will be able to work for 22 hours in pumping mode, now this period is 11 hours. With the construction of the “Yadenitsa” dam, will be increased the volume of the lower dam – where the waters are collected after being released from the Belmeken Dam to the Chaira Dam. A seven-kilometer reversible pressure tunnel will connect Chaira dam with Jadenitsa dam.
According to Minister Nikolov, the goal is to use the cascade in emergency situations for a period of 20 hours.
The Yadenitsa project began in 1994, but due to financing problems and considerations of increased seismic risk construction was suspended. In 2016-2017, the project was updated and is currently reaching the stage of its realization. Estimated completion time is 5 to 7 years.
