An article published in Mediapool reports that by the end of the year, the Chaira unit, which failed in August, will be repaired return to the electricity market, which will provide another 216 MW. This was announced after an inspection on Tuesday of how the machine is being repaired, as well as the rehabilitation of two of the other units, which is being funded by Kozloduy International Fund (KIF), with money supplied by the EC as compensation for the closed four reactors at NPP Kozloduy.
PSH “Chaira”, which is part of the hydro cascade Belmeken – Sestrimo and is a pumped storage hydropower system, has four units with a total capacity of 864 MW. Two of them have been suspended for rehabilitation under a project worth a total of 42.48 mil euros, of which 26.58 mil. euros are grants from the IFC under a contract signed in 2013. However, the project was severely delayed and the third machine crashed in August.
Currently, the work on the repair of the damaged unit has been optimized by transferring personnel from other facilities, reducing holidays and other measures. The goal is for the repair works to be completed by the end of the year, the management of the plant assured. This will provide an opportunity to accelerate the rehabilitation activities, as it is not possible to repair more than two machines at the same time on the site of the plant, according to Ministry of Energy.
