According to aggregate data for Europe, prepared by Bruegel, electricity consumption in Bulgaria during the second week of April dropped by 16%. The Institute points out that electricity consumption is one of the indicators through which the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy can be traced. It compares electricity use in the hours between 8:00 and 18:00 in Europe for each week since the beginning of March, with data from the same period for 2019. The biggest decrease in consumption is observed in Italy – 28% and Spain – a decrease of 23%.
Greece has seen a decrease of 13%, in Romania – of 15% and in Serbia only 5%, despite significant restrictive measures that have been introduced there to fight COVID-19. In Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, only 8%, 14% in the UK and 12% in France. In some countries, however, no decline was observed, but rather the opposite: Switzerland, Norway, Sweden and Finland reported an increase of 5%, 11%, 3% and 2% respectively.
